Filipinos in Qatar will mark the 117th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence with a grand celebration on Friday.

The day’s events will start with the hoisting of the national flag at the Philippine embassy by Ambassador Wilfredo C Santos who is celebrating the day in Qatar for the first time.

Heads of Filipino organisations and community members are expected to attend the ceremony which will end with ‘Almusal ng bayan’ or community breakfast — a tradition every year.

This will be followed by a motorcade from the embassy to Sheraton Doha Hotel where the day-long celebration will take place. Cultural presentations, singing and photography competitions, chess and dart tournaments, trade fair, food exhibition and car show are among the programmes. There will also be a medical mission and POLO-OWWA services at the venue. A gala dinner featuring performances by Kaloob Philippine Music and Dance Ministry and a fashion show on creations by Doha-based Filipino designers will cap the events.
