The speed limit on the February 22 Street will be restored to 100km per hour from the current 80km per hour once works on stretches of the highway are complete.

This was disclosed by Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, Director-General of the Traffic Department, in an informal talk with reporters on the sidelines of a coveted international traffic medicine conference that is underway here. Al Kharji, however, did not hint when the road works on the February 22 Street are expected to be complete. February 22 Street is a section of Al Shamal Expressway and an extension of the D Ring Road. The 24th World International Traffic Medicine Association (ITMA) Conference is important because it is being organised for the first time in the Arab region, the traffic chief said.

“We can benefit from studies and research conducted by international and local experts who are participating in the conference,” Al Kharji said in a press statement issued on Monday.

“Some 100 research papers will be presented at the event,” he said.

“There is a committee to evaluate that research, and we are waiting for recommendations at the end of the conference.”

Qatar has succeeded in reducing the death toll in traffic accidents by 8.5 percent and we hope to further reduce this percentage and indicators show there is a decrease compared to last year, said the traffic chief.

About the current traffic situation in Doha, Al Kharji said after all the projects are complete in two or three years, there will be a re-evaluation of traffic plans and solutions to problems, if any, will be looked into.
