Fast food joints under scrutiny for quality

DOHA: Municipal inspectors armed with judicial powers are taking food samples from fast food joints to check their quality and make sure that these eateries do not flout health and safety rules, particularly during the festive season. Samples of cooking oil used and ready sandwiches, among other things, are being collected by civic inspectors as part of what appears to be a rigorous municipal campaign launched ahead of Eid Al Adha which began yesterday. Not only cafeterias and other fast food joints but a host of other outlets like supermarkets, neighbourhood stores and bakeries are also being checked by the civic inspectors to ensure quality and their compliance with civic rules and standards. Slaughter houses have, meanwhile, been notified by the civic authorities to maintain strict hygiene during the festive season when thousands of sheep, cows and camels are sacrificed by devout Muslims. Customers wanting to use the services of the slaughter houses have been urged to maintain discipline and collect token numbers and wait for their turn with patience. It must be made sure by customers that veterinary doctors check an animal before and after an animal has been slaughtered for sacrifice, civic officials say.
