Environmental group SustainableQatar will hold today their monthly meeting at the Friends of Environment Centre (FEC) with interesting topics on significant global environmental issues up for discussion during a forum. Two speakers from the academe and an official of SustainableQatar will present topics with the members and guests who will attend the meeting aimed at promoting environmental awareness and action within the communities in Qatar. Mike Johnson, Middle School Associate Principal of American School Doha, will discuss on “Education for a Sustainable Future” while Karin Scholz-Barth, President of SustainableQatar, will discuss on “Green Infrastructures.” SustainableQatar officials said they were organised in March 2008 by academicians from several universities and schools in Qatar as a group of environmental and social educators getting together to share interests and start a dialogue. “Our goal is to share resources, foster collaboration, and make a real change in health and well-being of the community, environment and development of Qatar,” said a statement from SustainableQatar. Among the pioneers of the group are Jay Trimiar if Qatar University, Rosemay Lapka of Carnegie Mellon University, Mike Johnstone of American School Doha and Adam Dodge also of American School Doha. The group would want to expand beyond educators as they invite residents, community organizations, NGOs and representatives from the Qatari government and the community in general. “ Together, we can take steps towards creating a sustainable Qatar,” the statement said. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=October2009&file=Local_News200910052531.xml
