Qatari companies becoming the main exporters of solar energy know-how is a long-term vision of Qatar Science & Technology Park, executive chairman Dr Tidu Maini said yesterday. “Solar is the very best alternative energy solution for Qatar and offers a huge value chain and array of possibilities,” he observed at an event convened for an agreement signing with Chevron Corporation. Dr Maini was of the view that Qatar should concentrate on the upstream and downstream segments of the solar industry, with special emphasis on raw materials. The QSTP executive chairman had told Gulf Times in March last year that Qatar aimed to become a major player in the global solar energy industry by starting with making the much sought after raw material for solar cells and subsequently entering the downstream segment. “We have been doing a lot of scouting and found ways to enter the market under a fast-track project, and become key player in five to six years,” he had explained. Dr Maini said yesterday that the solar energy industry would become very competitive in the next four to five years and Qatar needs at least five years’ experience to become a major player in the field. He also pointed out that QSTP was in the process of setting up a small solar energy demonstrator. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=273884&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
