‘SustainableQatar’, a newly launched environmental group, kick-started its formal activities yesterday. SustainableQatar’ is a group of environmental and social educators getting together to share interests and work jointly to support Qatar’s sustainable development dream. It will share resources, foster collaboration, and make a real change in the health and well-being of the community, environment, and development of Qatar, said Katrin Scholz-Barth, President, SustainableQatar. “We’d like to expand our group beyond educators and invite citizens, community organizations, non-profits, NGOs, and representatives from the Qatari government to join us. Together, we can take the steps towards creating a Sustainable Qatar”, she said. The green group will have its special focus on key issues including carbon emissions, green buildings, water resources and recycling issues. The group seeks to be a resource that empowers the community to foster awareness, skills and knowledge, allowing people to take action through environmental and community service projects. It will strive to promote environmental awareness and action within the community. “We will strive to create and maintain environmentally responsible facilities, establish partnerships with local and international communities; formulate and implement an annual action plan and create action teams within each participating organization”, Katrin said The group will network with local and international agencies to come out with sustainable development proposals for the country and impart skills and knowledge to the local groups. SustainableQatar will operate under the umbrella of Friends of the Environment Center (FEC). Yesterday’s meeting also decided to intensify the membership drive. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=March2009&file=Local_News2009031161834.xml
