The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) recommends not drinking stimulants like coffee and tea at night because they are diuretic. Experts also recommend drinking plenty of liquids throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, to compensate the fluids the body loses during the fasting period, especially in hot weather. However, PHCC also recommends not drinking ice water during iftar because it constricts the capillaries and complicates digestion, while soft drinks are also not suitable because they cause bloating and a sensation of fullness. The iftar meal should be assorted and complete, avoiding fried food and relying on grilled food to give the stomach a rest. In addition, suhoor meals should include products like milk, yoghurt, bread, honey and fruits. The use of miswak is recommended because it contains eight chemicals which whiten the teeth, strengthen the gums, fight germs, and keep the mouth redolent. Pregnant and breastfeeding women must seek the advice of a physician. If the doctor allows them to fast, they should not eat large amounts of food and divide it in two meals. People with specific conditions, like hypertension or diabetes, must also consult their doctors. In addition, eating vegetables is a good choice, especially cucumber, since it has benefits like reducing the feeling of thirst. Experts also determine it’s better not to eat spices, condiments and pickles because they cause indigestion. Regular physical activity is recommended as well, just like not sleeping after iftar. People must also get enough sleep and take a short nap during the day to restore energy and be ready for night prayers. Having a large meal shortly before bedtime has a negative impact on the quality of sleep. Other recommendations for the month of Ramadan include eating less sweets and not drinking tea unless one or two hours after eating, for the reason that it prevents the absorption of iron. Furthermore, it’s important for the elderly to eat food that contains proteins, such as grilled or boiled fish, avoid fries and eat fibre. Older people need a special diet because while ageing the bowel movement and the secretion of hormones become slow and, in general, the organism is less efficient. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/245218-drinking-ice-water-during-iftar-can-complicate-digestion-phcc.html
