The Qatari capital will host the second leg of the 2008 GCC Cycling Championship on November 22, Majid Al Naimi, Secretary General of Qatar Cycling Federation (GCF) announced yesterday.
Seven Qatari riders have been named by QCF for the 10-event race which starts in Bahrain on November 21. The event ends on November 30 following the eighth stage that will be held in the UAE.
Besides Doha and Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE will also organise different stages of the race, according Al Naimi. Out of the eight stages, two will be held in Doha on November 22 and 25.
The second stage will be held at Losail International Circuit.
Riders from five countries namely Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE will participate in the event.
This event will be followed by the Doha Grand which will be held in Doha from December 13 to 17. The Gold Jersey race will be held from December 18 to 20, the QCF official added.
Top riders from the Arab world are expected to compete in the two races which will be conducted by QCF.
In January next year, QCF will stage the annually-held Tour of Qatar, a five-day event contested by the top teams from around the world.
2008 GCC Cycling Championship Schedule: November 21: Pre-race/Bahrain/8 km; November 22: First Stage/Bahrain/90 km; November 23: Second Stage/Saudi Arabia/90 km; November 24: Third Stage/Saudi Arabia / 131 km; November 25: Fourth Stage/Qatar/112 km /Starting at 2pm, in Losail Circuit; November 27: Fifth Stage/UAE/121km; November 28: Sixth Stage/Oman/110km; November 29: Seventh Stage/UAE/85km; November 30: Eighth Stage/UAE/ 80km.
