Many displaced Filipino workers in Dubai affected by global financial meltdown are likely to seek employment in Qatar where there are still job opportunities, according to a leader of advocacy group Migrante. Jhon de Jesus, coordinator of Migrante-Qatar, said he also agreed with observations that Qatar is the alternative destination of the retrenched Filipinos in Dubai because the country continues its development boom and need more workers in several industries that are implementing many projects. “Qatar is still at its peak of development while opportunities in Dubai have already subsided because many infrastructure projects have already been completed that it just needs maintenance workers,”de Jesus said. His statement is related with the projections of Philippine Labour Secretary Marianito Roque published in an online news that nearly 3,000 retrenched workers in Dubai may find some employment in Qatar. Roque has advised the laid off workers in Dubai to submit their curriculum vitae to the labor attaché for possible transfer to Qatar which granted 120,124 visa allocations for Filipino workers this year. He said the displaced workers could either submit their curriculum vitae and if more training is needed his department can conduct it so that they could transfer to other countries or if they want to return to the country for good, the Department of Labour and Employment can provide them capital for livelihood activities. Roque said Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has recently increased the livelihood assistance fund to returning Overseas Filipino Workers to P1 billion to accommodate more who want to start their own business. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local%5FNews&subsection=Qatar+News&month=January2009&file=Local_News2009012533535.xml
