Law enforcement officers of the Doha Municipality ordered the confiscation of 5,000kg of meat which was found unfit for human consumption from a large quantity of Australian meat inspected at Doha’s automatic slaughterhouse. Explaining the measures of vigilance maintained by the Hygiene Affairs Department, its deputy director, Mohamed Lahdan al-Kabi, said in a statement to a local daily that the officers had conducted 201 rounds of inspection in the past month and visited as many as 89 butcheries. The automatic slaughterhouse is exclusive for handling imported Australian sheep and has a capacity to slaughter thousands of sheep everyday. The process begins at dawn and ends by noon. Besides, there are two other slaughterhouses, one for handling sheep procured from private farms within the country, and the other for camels and cows. Every slaughterhouse has a veterinary unit. After the slaughtering, each animal is medically examined and approved for consumption, said al-Kabi. “Those that are not approved are confiscated and a certificate is issued accordingly on the basis of which the supplier is paid compensation as per regulations.” He also pointed out that the imported sheep may be in good health on its arrival here but may develop problems later due to climatic changes.
