It’s a historic day for Qatar as one of the most modern rail systems in the world commenced its operations in Doha today (May 8) with services running from 8 am to 11 pm from Sunday to Thursday. It is a game-changer for the city and excited residents were seen taking pictures and videos of their much-anticipated first metro ride.

The initial operation includes 13 out of 18 Red Line stations: Al Qassar, DECC, QIC West Bay, Corniche, Al Bidda (Interchange Station), Msheireb (Interchange Station), Al Doha Al Jadeda, Umm Ghawalina, Al Matar Al Qadeem, Oqba Ibn Nafie, Free Zone, Ras Bu Fontas and Al Wakra.

In line with this, Mowasalat has also announced special deals in their Karwa taxis and also free feeder buses for metro commuters.

The completion of Doha Metro Red Line South will complement Qatar’s preparations to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 and the country’s overall progress in modernising its transportation infrastructure.

The rail transit system is part of the Qatar Government’s €130bn diversification and modernisation strategy involving public and private investments.

Doha Metro is part of a larger railway network, which consists of five modern and flexible railway systems integrated across the Persian Gulf.

The larger network includes the development of passenger and freight rail transport systems, along with fast rail links to the international airport based on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) feasibility study.

The objective of the transport master plan for Qatar is to develop attractive, efficient and reliable public transport in the country.
