The Doha Centre for Media Freedom has expressed its support for Adel Al Mallah, an investigative reporter with Al-Sharq, who has received anonymous death threats. An Al-Sharq official said the threats could be connected with a series of reports about a person wanted by the police for alleged involvement in the embezzlement of QR80m. The journalist said the man had fled the country. A1-Mallah, who is Egyptian, was sent an audio file of a poem threatening to kill him. “Soon you will hear bullets whistling in your head”, it said. The journalist told police in Mesaimeer, near Doha, about the threats on May 22. “These threats must be taken seriously, though we should not over-react. No journalist has been murdered in Qatar in the past ten years,” the Centre said yesterday. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=May2009&file=Local_News2009052825157.xml
