The record price for a piece work by a living Arab artist was fetched on Monday at Sotheby’s auction in Doha. “Icons of the Nile” by the Egyptian artist Chant Avedissian was sold for $1,565,000 at Sotheby’s contemporary art auction held at Katara cultural village in Doha.
Nine new artists’ records were fetched. The auction included over 40 works of contemporary Arab, Iranian and International art reaching a total sales of $15,177,000 including a buyers premium of $5 million more than what Sotheby’s was expecting to reach.
“This was the best result we had in the region” Robin Woodhead, Sotheby’s International Chairman, told Arabian Business. “This is a remarkable achievement that we would be very happy to have in anyone of our sales rooms. Doha sales was no longer a regional sale, but it was a truly international sale” he added.
Bidders from 15 different countries participated bidding from the room, online and through 30 telephone lines.
“This represents for us and for Doha the growing importance of Qatar in the international art world” said Woodhead.
Between the works of art that reached the highest prices there were also an installation by Donald Judd that fetched $3,525,000 and Maurizio Cattelan’s $1,265,000 “Andreas e Mattia”.
“We didn’t expect to achieve such an incredible result tonight. With 15.2 million dollars I think we are set to be the highest achieved result for contemporary art sold in the Middle East” said Lina Lazaar Jameel, Sotheby’s International Contemporary Art Specialist.
