Two diamond rings worth QR470,000 ($129,000) were left in a bathroom at Qatar’s National Convention Centre and turned in by a cleaner working at the venue.
The 32-year-old Ethiopian cleaner has reportedly been handed a cash reward for her honesty in turning in the rings.
According to an article in Doha News the rings were lost in February during the Doha Jewelery and Watches Exhibition.
The cleaner, Andnet Zelekew, was quoted as saying the first thing she thought about “was the owner and how she would feel”.
She called the assistant manager and turned in the rings immediately. “Even for two minutes, I didn’t hold [them] in my hand, because [they] still had the price tag,” she said.
The newspaper said a QNCC spokesperson declined to reveal how much cash Zelekew was awarded.
The spokesperson said: “I applaud and thank Ms. Zelekew for her honesty and rectitude. QNCC believes in fostering a working environment that is loyal, secure and trusting.
“For this reason, we believe that our employees always display exceptional integrity.”
