Doha , April 1- The deadline of the Doha Centre for Media Freedom’s (DCMF) inaugural cartoon contest entitled “DCMF World Press Freedom Cartoon Contest” is set to end April 1, after the center first invited participants back in February. The winners will be announced on May 3 to mark World Press Freedom Day. The competition’s theme this year will be major events related to media freedom that took place in 2012 and 2013.” DCMF said in a statement on their website that “For World Press Freedom Day in 2013, Doha Centre for Media Freedom would like to honor the bravery and creativity of courageous cartoonists and journalists who use their work to battle against restrictions imposed on the media and society in general.” The top three will win $1500, $1000 and $800 respectively. They will be notified by e-mail on April 20. A jury of five experts, led by the center’s director Jan Keulen will choose the winners. The center said in its statement that they chose the date because “May 3 was declared World Press Freedom Day by the UN General Assembly In 1993, and each year it serves as a reminder of the difficulties faced by journalists and members of the media around the world.” Some of the rules of the competition are that any text must be in Arabic or English and that they have to be original work. The center encouraged cartoonist to have their subjects related particularly to attacks against journalists, crackdown on media and censorship Source:Qatar Chronicle
