He was one of the greatest boxing legends in the world – a fierce fighter and a devoted activist. Muhammad Ali. Since it’s opening at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) on July 7, 2016, visitors from Qatar and around the world have flocked to the ‘Muhammad Ali: Tribute to a Legend’ exhibit to view some of Ali’s most personal memorabilia from his illustrious career in the ring.

But for the first time on Monday, December 19, 2016, Ali’s twin daughter Jamillah Ali made her inaugural visit to MIA for a private tour of the exhibition in memorial of her late father, who passed away on June 3, 2016. During her visit she met with H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums.

Located on the fourth floor of MIA’s eastern gallery, ‘Tribute to a Legend’ is the first compelling exhibition in honour of the Ali since his passing and features a collection of 22 artefacts from throughout his career. Highlights include photography from Ali’s 1971 outdoor exhibition match at Doha Stadium, his iconic draft exemption letter – on loan for the first time to be displayed on the 50^th anniversary of its writing, when Ali was 24-years-old.

Also featured are items traversing his route to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. The exhibition has been curated under the patronage of Qatar Museums’ 3-2-1 Olympic and Sports Museum, which is soon set to open in its new, permanent location in 2017 as part of the redeveloped Khalifa International Stadium. ‘Muhammad Ali: Tribute to a Legend’ is open to the public until February 25, 2017.
