A man and his wife were fined QR5,000 each by a Doha court of first instance, “for physically assaulting each other” following a verbal duel between them. According to the charge sheet, “following a dispute between them, the woman kicked her husband and he slapped her.” An investigator said that the woman rushed to the police station after the incident and collapsed on her way out. She was taken by an ambulance to the hospital. The couple had filed complaints against each other earlier also. A medical report that was presented to the court showed that the injuries sustained by the couple were not of a serious nature. The court heard that the couple had been awaiting the result of a divorce deal with the issue of the custody of their son remaining unsettled. The man claimed in the court that the clash started when she said bad things about him. “When I went to the house to give clothes to our son, I saw her talking on the phone. She ended the call when she saw me. I insisted to know who she was talking to and I tried to snatch the mobile to see the number. She kicked me in the chest and I slapped her.” The woman did not attend the trial but the court relied on her statement to the police where she said: “He came to the house to force me to give up my financial rights as a wife and to drop the claim for custody of my son.” The court cleared the woman from the charges of cursing her husband saying his claims in this regard were not supported by any evidence and were unconvincing. The judge said: “The court is doubtful about his version especially that there had been continuous disputes between them.” http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=305303&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
