The organisers of a ‘Cool Campaign’ offering relief to labourers have termed the exercise “extremely successful”.
The campaign started as a small initiative by Qatar Living and iloveqatar (ILQ) volunteer groups, but quickly garnered the support of some of the biggest businesses in Qatar.
“More than 10,000 items were distributed to labourers working under the intense desert heat across the country on Saturday. The look on their faces was priceless,” an official told Gulf Times yesterday.
Out of the current 1.6mn population in Qatar, an estimated 1mn are unskilled labourers, mostly from Asia.
“We have been absolutely thrilled with the amount of support extended to us by volunteers of Qatar Living, ILQ and organisations such as AFC Asian Cup 2011, Vodafone Qatar, Sigma Paints Qatar, Gems Advertising, Qatar Animal Welfare Society, Qatar National Imports & Exports,” the official said.
The organisations, according to him, were instrumental in raising thousands of items from water packs, juices, ice boxes to caps and T-shirts during the collection campaigns.
On Saturday, when the items were distributed, around 75 volunteers used 20 vehicles and covered Al Rayyan, Al Gharaffa, West Bay, Al Sadd, and as far as Al Wakrah, Sumaisma and Al Khor.
“Some of the volunteers took a day off in order to be able to be part of the campaign. We would like to thank their humane gesture,” the official said.
