The State of Qatar reiterated that the continuation of the unjust blockade imposed almost two years ago, under vague and exposed pretexts to the international community, constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, human rights, and the United Nations (UN) Charter and undermines international cooperation and the international multilateral system.

Qatar warned of weakening the multilateral system, which would spread the policy of bullying in international relations, and replace the rule of law with the law of jungle, with the risks and consequences of a terrible price for all.

This came in a statement of HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, at the High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the occasion of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

Her Excellency said that the continuing and growing challenges of the international community were a growing concern for all, as crises and breaches of international law threatened peace and stability in the world, stressing that the only option for achieving peace and development and protecting human dignity is based on diplomacy and multilateralism.

Her Excellency noted the achievements of multilateral international action since the establishment of the UN system, most recently the climate change agreement, the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and the Global compact for migration.

Her Excellency added that the principle of multilateralism, on which the UN had been built, now faced serious challenges, which almost undermine the gains made and the international efforts to promote peace, development and human rights.

Her Excellency stressed the major concerns about the challenges facing the Arab region as a result of the continuation of conflicts and the eruption of crises to achieve the objectives prohibited by the UN Charter and international law and pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and stability, which this meeting promotes.

HE the Ambassador pointed out that multilateralism and diplomacy are clearly reflected in the role played by the UN as the main forum for international cooperation and burden-sharing in the face of challenges in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter, calling on Member States to develop their capacities to enhance the role of the organization, to be at the level of international challenges, and enable them to achieve their goals.

Her Excellency also expressed the support of the State of Qatar to make the UN closer to people as a "house of pluralism".

Her Excellency pointed out that the role and effectiveness of international institutions, in particular the UN, is closely linked to its ability to translate the UN Charter into action, to end violations of international law and human rights, to respond to people's concerns and to achieve the common aspirations of the international community for peace, security, development and human rights.

Her Excellency noted the role of the State of Qatar in the promotion of peace, human rights and development, adding that the State of Qatar will not hesitate to use its diplomatic and multilateral status at the regional and international levels to support the role of the UN and achieve the objectives of the international community in the area of humanitarian support and peaceful settlement of crises, conflicts, the rule of law, human rights and others.

Her Excellency expressed Qatar's pride of Doha, which has become the capital of multilateral diplomacy and a platform for dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation in several fields, including science, culture, sports, development, politics, freedoms and law.

At the end of her statement, Her Excellency said that in order to translate the policy and commitment of the State of Qatar into the role played by the UN, stakeholders in Qatar have continued to forge partnerships with UN bodies, while continuing to provide financial support.

In this context, Her Excellency referred to the support provided by the State of Qatar to fund the core resources of the UN organizations with an amount of USD 500 million in support of the UN system reform plan and the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, stressing that this approach initiated by the State of Qatar comes in order to maintain international multilateral action.
