The Yale Arab Alumni Association (YAAA) and the American University of Beirut (AUB) are pleased to invite you to a dynamic conference entitled
Navigating the Tides: Urban Transformations in the Arab World. The conference will be held at the W Hotel in Doha, Qatar, from 5-7 May 2013.
Full conference details, including speaker bios and conference registration, are available at
the conference website.
Navigating the Tides will bring together leading scholars and practitioners to discuss how culture, history, memory and educational opportunities have shaped and continue to shape the development of cities and communities in the region. It will also examine the social transformations in different Arab cities resulting from regional and rural migration, the relationship between urban planning and civic engagement, and competing definitions of “sustainability” in urban contexts in the region. The event is being held in Qatar due to the conversations on the topic already taking place there and the emergence of Doha as a research hub in the Arab world.
YAAA and AUB are creating an intimate intellectual setting for our keynote speakers, panelists, participants and supporters. To encourage participation by younger scholars with an interest in the topic, we have set special rates for
students, as well as for AUB and Yale alumni. Space is limited, so we encourage early registration.
