The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality, has announced the completion of 85% of the construction works in Al Furjan Parks in various areas across Qatar, including 14 parks with an area of 123,048 m2 containing various entertainment and sports facilities distributed over several municipalities.

The Ministry of Municipality is keen to provide Al Furjan parks in various municipalities in the country, especially areas that lack parks and green spaces, to contribute to providing an outlet for the residents of the area while ensuring easy access to them without the need to move to far places. The Ministry of Municipality represented by the Public Parks Department is also keen to increase the per capita share in the square metre of green space, which will reflect positively on the health and safety of the residents.

On this occasion, Eng. Muhammad Arqoub Al Kha​ldi, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, stated: “The Committee was keen to implement Al Furjan Parks with the aim of contributing to the development of the public parks system in Qatar, in accordance with the country’s current directives in terms of increasing green areas, as it comes within the Committee’s plan to beautify different areas and provide all amenities for community members. This comes in line with the comprehensive development plan that is implemented in various service entities in Qatar.”

He added: “The implementation of Al Furjan Parks comes as a continuation of the committee’s efforts to protect the environment, improve the residents’ quality of life and achieve sustainable environmental development for all generations. Moreover, it will support local communities by providing open green spaces to meet the requirements of residential neighborhoods.”

Eng. Jazmine Sheikh, Projects Design Manager at the Committee, stated: “Work is underway to complete construction works on Rawdat Egdaim, Al Mearad, Al Wajbah and Al Thumama parks, to become a healthy outlet for residents of those areas. These parks include many entertainments and sports facilities that make them an enjoyable destination for all family members. The facilities in each park have been designed according to the needs of the residents, elderly and individuals with special needs. To ensure the safety of the visitors, the park has been designed to include several entrances and exits that are clearly visible to visitors.”

She added: “The area surrounding each park has been considered so that the design of each park fits the area. The location of the parks has been carefully chosen to be located near residential and service facilities while serving the largest number of residents in each area.”

Eng. Maryam Al Kuwari, Projects Design Manager at the Committee, stated that Bu Hamour, Al Sailiya, Al Muraikh and Al Ebb parks were designed in line with the area’s character, the surrounding buildings and landmark attractions in the area. For example, the main design lines of Bu Hamour Park are inspired by one of the distinctive elements in the Bu Hamour area, the old markets. The arches of parks are sketched similar to the designs of traditional market shadings. The design also includes pedestrian and jogging paths to facilitate exercise. Ease of access to the park was considered through walkways connected to surrounding areas, without the need to use cars. The parks include various facilities and services that vary according to the area of the park, such as green areas, pedestrian, cycling paths, children's play areas, sports equipment, benches and service facilities.

Eng. Hessa Al Kaabi, Projects Design Manager at the committee, stated: “Hazm Al Markhiya, Fereej Al Soudan and Al Thameed, and the three parks in Al Wakra, include green areas and a variety of trees that include local trees as well as other types of tree that complements the nature of our environment. The green spaces cover about 70% of the parks to help improve the climate by reducing temperatures and carbon emissions. In addition to giving an aesthetic appearance and making the parks an attractive and enjoyable destination and encouraging the visitors to interact with the surrounding environment and enjoy nature. It also includes pedestrian and running paths to provide an opportunity to exercise, in addition, to play areas for children and benches to ensure the comfort of the visitors.”

The Committee works in coordination with several ministries and entities in Qatar such as the Ministry of Municipality, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Culture, Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar Railway Company, Private Engineering Office and others. It aims to humanize cities with its vision to create a balance between people and the environment and change the car-dominated culture into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly culture. The Committee’s main responsibility is to provide public services and spaces that promote a healthier lifestyle.

To achieve our common goal, the committee works hand in hand with them to increase the number of green areas in cities and residential neighbourhoods, provide safe lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, and develop outdoor leisure destinations such as plazas and public parks and beaches. This is in addition to developing Central Doha and the Corniche. Furthermore, we work on developing the public realm by adding street furniture, bicycle parking spaces and adding decorative street lighting, as well as displaying artworks and sculptures to enhance outdoor spaces.
