Students and staff of College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q) joined in worldwide celebrations of Lung Health Day recently. The event, part of Respiratory Care Week, is held in late October of each year, to build awareness of respiratory issues such as asthma, sleep disorders and neonatal care, and to celebrate the respiratory therapy profession. This year’s event was hosted by the Respiratory Therapy (RT) Programme of the School of Health Sciences, in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation and held at HMC Education Centre. Guests received information on proper respiratory care from CNA-Q students, the RT Department at HMC, and Maquet Middle East. The guest speaker was Bernard Fowler, senior application specialist and global trainer – critical care at Maquet Middle East, based in Dubai. Christine Bolan, dean of Health Sciences at CNA-Q, recalled that beginning around 1950, respiratory therapy is one of the youngest areas of medicine. It has grown quickly worldwide due to the importance of healthy breathing and the increase in respiratory conditions like asthma and lung cancer. CNA-Q offers the only RT diploma programme in Qatar. Last year, the programme received international accreditation from the Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education (CoARTE), based in Canada. CNA-Q is the first institution outside Canada to receive this acclaim.
