Yahoo Sports reported on 26 September 2022 that China will be gifting Qatar two giant pandas as a token to signify the World Cup 2022 being held in the country.
As per the report, Zhou Jian, China's ambassador to Qatar mentioned that the two pandas named 'Suhail' and 'Soraya' will arrive in Qatar in the month of October before the World Cup begins on 20 November 2022.
The panda's name 'Suhail' represents the brightest stars that is visible in the Gulf region and the name 'Soraya' is the Arabic term for the Pleiades star cluster.
The following was also stated by the envoy, "This is a gift presented by the 1.4 billion Chinese people for the Qatar World Cup, and will surely become a new symbol of China-Qatar friendship."
