W Doha Hotel and Residences plans to mark the death of King of Pop Michael Jackson with a special charity event on Wednesday. Proceeds from the event, to be held at the hotel’s Crystal Lounge, will be donated to support the ‘Road to Awareness’ campaign – a project helping street children in Cairo - spearheaded by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Funds. The charity provides social, medical and psychological support to 2,000 children and protects them from violence, abuse and exploitation. W Doha director of beverages and food, Antoine Pravin, said the hotel and its parent company – Starwood Hotels - had a policy of supporting such initiatives. “Street children are one of the most vulnerable groups in society because they are at high risk of violence, sexual abuse, substance abuse and health problems,” he said. Pravin explained that the project addressed the children’s needs in a practical way while re-integrating them into society. “It was estimated in 2001 that there were between 600,000 and 1mn street children, with an average age of 13, who are living in the urban areas of Egypt,” he said. Last year 12 Starwood representatives initiated a ‘Road to Awareness’ bike ride by cycling 450km, including one of the most notorious mountain climbs in the Tour de France, raising nearly 250,000 euros (QR1.3mn) for a child-to-child radio project in Mozambique, Pravin said. The bike ride continues in 2009 to support street children in Cairo, he added. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=301387&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
