A surgical centre with resident doctors who hail from and were trained in Europe has opened here to cater to patients who need specialised surgical services. “Our team is composed of excellent European trained doctors, who each focus on certain areas of specialisation,” said Marcela Ochranova, Manager of California Medical Center Surgical Speciality Center and Family Practice. Opened just two weeks ago, California Medical Center boasts among its doctors general surgeon Dr Gerhard Szinicz, the inventor of the adjustable gastric band – a silicone device for surgical management of obesity. A professor of surgery from Austria, Dr Szinicz has been conducting minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for over a decade now. He has also been making innovations for the advancement of MIS. “The advantages of MIS have been proved by numerous international studies in the last 15 to 20 years. With the operation involving only much smaller incisions and lack of physical burdens to the patient, MIS results in reduced post-operative pain and complications,” said Dr Szinicz. Dr Szinicz specialises in bariatric surgery — a surgical procedure undertaken to treat obesity. “Dr Szinicz and Dr Peter Siman, the Center’s orthopaedic surgeon, have already performed their first surgeries successfully at the Doha Clinic,” said Ochranova. Dr Siman has extensive experience in shoulder and knee arthroscopy. The other specialists at the Center include Dr Z Maccale, a paediatric neurosurgeon, Dr Pamela Weissen, a consultant in family medicine, and visiting neurosurgeon Dr John Strobech. The surgical centre, located near Al Ahli Hospital in Bin Omran, is open every day and can be reached on phone number 4868690. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=June2009&file=Local_News2009062821713.xml
