Celebrations galore on National Sports Day

Doha, February 13- Celebrations to mark the second edition of Qatar National Sports Day kicked off in Doha Tuesday morning, in implementation of the Emir decision which declared the second Tuesday of February each year to be National Sports Day. The significance of the National Sports Day lies in spreading awareness of the importance of sports in the lives of individuals and communities and the need to embrace a healthy lifestyle through sport. The activities began on the Corniche by a march started from the mascot of the Asian Games 2006 “Orry”, to the Sheraton Doha Hotel. Several top figures in the state, representatives of ministries and public and private institutions and many of the athletes took part in the march. All sports clubs and federations opened doors to the public from 9:00 am, and will continue to open until 10:00 pm to provide sports facilities and other services to the public. The also organized several programs and activities at various venues in the country. The state’s ministries, government departments and public sector institutions as well as other organizations including the private sector, are also organizing sports activities and programs. A slew of events is being held at various venues such as Katara, Qatar Foundation, youth centers, independent schools, universities and hotels. Many companies are holding their own sports activities such as basketball, volleyball, football fun run and exercise routines for their employees in support of the annual celebration.
