Experience the excitement and glamor of Broadway right here in Qatar with the premiere of CATS the Musical!

As part of the entertainment segment for the Shop Qatar festival, a number of international names and headliners will be performing all around Doha. Among the big names heading to our neck of the desert is the world-renowned, and longest running musical, CATS.

Background and accolades

CATS the Musical is adapted from T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”, which was meant to be for children but also appealed to adults, and due to this appeal was transformed into the popular musical that still lives on today.

Munkustrap,

Originally a British production that opened in the 1980’s, CATS became the longest running musical in the history of British theatre. It closed its final show in London in 2002 but continued to show on Broadway where it won seven Tony Awards and also became the longest running musical on Broadway.

An international sensation

Since it first debuted, CATS has been performed in over thirty countries and in more than 300 cities. Buenos Aires, Seoul, Helsinki, Singapore, Tokyo Budapest, and Vienna are among some of the many destinations where CATS was presented. CATS also had a US tour.

The musical has been seen by over 73 million people around the world. In order to accommodate the diverse citizens of other nations, CATS has been translated into ten languages. It has been performed in Japanese, German, (three versions for Germany, Austria and Switzerland), Hungarian, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch, Swedish, French, Spanish (two versions for Mexico and Argentina) and Italian.

Demeter

Although the show itself has been translated into different languages, the title of the show has almost always remained “CATS”. In Mexico, it was proposed to rename the show to “Gatos,” which is cats in Spanish. However, people preferred the original name and they kept it as CATS.

Behind the scenes

Setting up CATS at each venue requires a lot of work and effort.

Typically, the show requires eight 40-foot trucks to move all the equipment from theatre to theatre. The sets, musical instruments, sound and lighting systems, along with hundreds of costumes and wigs, and over 100 lamps for the lighting rig are transported in these trucks.

Over 70 people work day and night to make sure that the show is ready for the opening night performance.

Qatar debut

CATS will be performing at the Qatar National Convention Center Theater and captivate and wow audiences in matinee and evening performances between February 1-4.
