Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has called for bringing Israeli war criminals to book and prosecuting them for human rights violations in the occupied territories in Palestine. The Chairman of NHRC, Dr Ali Semaikh Al Marri, who is attending an Arab League human rights meeting in Cairo, told reporters on Tuesday the convention will be submitting a report with recommendations to the Arab League Committee for Human Rights in this regard. The Permanent Arab League Committee for Human Rights began at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Al Marri. A number of experts representing human rights organizations in Arab countries are attending the meet. Speaking to reporters after the opening session, Al Marry said that several topics were discussed at the meeting, including procedural by-laws that would facilitate a strong reaction against Israeli violations of human rights in the occupied territories in conformity with the conditions approved by the Arab League Council. Applications by a number of non-governmental organizations to join the session as observers were also taken up at the meet. Al Marri said the session will submit a report to the Arab League’s Human Rights panel containing a number of recommendations aimed at facilitating the tracking of Israeli war criminals and prosecuting them. He then elaborated on the necessity of joint Arab action in this regard adding that coordination with international efforts working in the same direction was extremely necessary to avoid duplication. He said that Qatar had individually developed a number of mechanisms that could be developed and adopted by the Arab League. Arabs should accelerate efforts to bring Israeli criminals of war to book and prosecute them, he said, adding that March 16 will be observed as the Arab Day for Human Rights. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local%5FNews&subsection=Qatar+News&month=July2009&file=Local_News2009072315755.xml
