The British Council has once again launched the prestigious awards celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni in Qatar and around the world.

To mark the occasion, the British Ambassador to the State of Qatar, H.E. Mr. Jonathan Wilks, said,

“I’m delighted to announce the third cycle of the British Council’s Study UK Alumni Awards in Qatar. Through this scheme we celebrate the achievements of the many Qataris who succeed in their studies in UK and return home to play an important part in the development of their own land. They represent an outstanding part of the human bridge between our two countries, which the UK values greatly, and an inspiration and example to others to follow in their footsteps. I encourage everybody qualified to apply.”

The Study UK Alumni Awards celebrate and showcase the impact and value of UK higher education and raise the international profile of alumni who studied in the UK. Award winners and finalists are leaders in their fields who have used their experience of studying at a UK university to make a positive contribution to their communities, industries and countries.

This will be the third cycle of the awards, which are first celebrated at a national level in Qatar. All applicants including national awards winners will then be put forward for the global awards set to begin from March 2021 till the winner’s announcement in September 2021.

We are also delighted to announce that one of the global finalists of last year’s Study UK Alumni Awards 2019-20, Entrepreneurial category was hailed from Qatar.

Mr. Khalifa Al Haroon, a graduate of Anglia Ruskin University. The Founder and CEO of ILoveQatar.net and the I Love Qatar (ILQ) Network, which is Qatar’s first Qatari social website. Khalifa, also known as Mr. Q on his blog/vlog, has a background in law, investment banking and social media management. He has launched a number of online shows and often appears on international news channel to provide commentary. Khalifa obtained his law degree from the Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, which is where he began as an entrepreneur and set up his first business as a student, gaining great experience which he has since applied in Qatar in many successful business ventures.

"I feel both honoured and privileged to have been recognized by the British Council after years of hard work. Of course, my achievement wouldn't have been possible without the amazing team that has helped me to bring my ideas to life. I hope to continue making my family, friends and the community proud. Thank you to the British Council for the amazing kindness and for encouraging me to be a part of the local and global awards. It's really great to see how the organization cares about students so long after they've graduated.”

– Khalifa Al Haroon

The national awards are open to UK alumni currently based in Qatar. UK alumni have either studied in the UK at an officially recognised provider of UK university degree-level study for a minimum of a term or semester, or have been awarded a full UK degree-level qualification (or higher) by a UK university through a local institution overseas, within the last 15 years.

Less than one month left for UK university alumni to submit an application, call for applications close on 30 October 2020 at 16:00 GMT.

Finalists and winners of the awards will be announced in early of 2021 during the annual Qatar-UK Alumni Networking ceremony. Award winners have the opportunity to raise their international profile, expand their professional networks, and enhance their careers.
