Awqaf readies 2,150 mosques; announces events for Ramadan

A report by The Peninsula on 21 March 2023 has mentioned that the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has readied 2,150 mosques in Qatar for receiving worshippers during Ramadan. the announcement was made by the ministry at Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab Mosque on 20 March 2023.

The ministry also has said that separate arrangements for women have also been made in about 120 mosques across Qatar, the report mentioned.

Apart from this, thousands of religious activities, Iftar meals for fasting people and food baskets to needy, religious lectures, and cultural & educational competitions have also been lined up.

According to the report, a group of mosques will be available for Itikaf. It is a practice of secluding oneself during the final 10 days of Ramadan in a mosque.

As per Mohamad Hamad Al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Religious Calls and Mosques at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, “Imams are ready for leading prayers during the Holy Month of Ramadan. As many as 50 supportive imams (collaborators) have been assigned for leading prayers especially Trawih prayer in mosques during Ramadan. 25 Qatari imams have also been assigned for support during the blessed month”.

Al Kuwari also said that the ministry in coordination with charity organisations and philanthropists has applied to organise Iftar programmes adjacent to mosques.

Other events announced for Ramadan

The report also mentioned the following announcements during the press conference.

A large number of religious activities will be held under its six types of endowment funds benefiting over 20,000 people. The Iftar programme will provide Iftar meals to 10,000 fasting people daily throughout Ramadan. food baskets will be distributed to needy families and individuals under Salat Al Ata programme.

The department will also launch new scholarships in coordination with Education Above All Foundation. An app will be launched on smart phones offering services of Zakat calculation and inquiries related to giving Zakat. Needy people will be able to apply for assistance through the app and follow up on their applications.

The Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center will organise many programmes for non-Arabic speakers. The Bin Zaid Forum for Muslim Expatriate Communities will be held in six languages for 15 days, starting from the fourth day of Ramadan until the 19th day.

The Sharia Research Section of Research and Studies Department will hold cultural and educational competitions during Ramadan. The contests questions will be related to Islamic history and culture will be asked throughout Ramadan. The winners will be announced after Ramadan and will get cash prizes. The winner of the 1st place will get QR 3,000. The winners of second and third place will get QR 2,000 and QR 1,500, respectively. The winners from four to 10 places will get QR 500 each.

Department of Religious Call and Guidance will hold 950 religious lectures for men and women separately during Ramadan. Over 8,000 bags containing pamphlets will be distributed during Ramdan and the department will organise two contests on the Holy Quran for children and as many as 60 visits to patients at hospitals will be made.
