The Four Seasons Hotel Doha and the College of North Atlantic-Qatar (CNAQ) together with other Canadian organisations in Qatar are organising the annual Terry Fox run tomorrow morning. The run aims to spread cancer awareness and this is the eighth year that the hotel is supporting the event in Doha, with all proceeds going to cancer research.
Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts founder and CEO, Isadore Sharp made a commitment to support the annual fundraising event after Terry Fox initiated the event in 1980. Fox, who had bone cancer and had to have his left leg amputated, was determined to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Unfortunately Fox had to stop his run after 3,339 miles as the cancer had spread into his lungs, and he tragically passed away in June 1981 at the age of 22.
Since then, more than $400mn has been raised in Fox’s name towards finding a cure for cancer. Sharp made the personal pledge to support the run until a cure for the disease is found, and since the establishment of the run, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has helped to organise the Marathon of Hope with the Canadian Cancer Society in Canada and around the world. The 5km run at CNAQ is a volunteer-led event, and volunteers can register on the morning from 9.30-11am before walking, running, skating or cycling the course.
For the second time, money will be donated to local efforts to cure cancer as there are a number of research projects attempting to find a cure for the disease in Qatar.
