The US ambassador to Qatar said yesterday he was optimistic a branch of the Washington-based American Chamber of Commerce will open in Doha soon. “It will start a new chapter in the trade relationship between Qatar and the US,” the envoy said in remarks to this newspaper. Joseph LeBaron said the US Embassy and officials from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs last week discussed the issue of setting up a branch of the American Chamber of Commerce here. “They (Foreign Ministry officials) said they hoped to be able to forward the request with a favourable comment to the Ministry of Business and Trade,” said LeBaron. He said after approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the next step would be for the application to go to the Ministry of Business and Trade. LeBaron said he was hoping the registration for the American Chamber of Commerce office here would be concluded in a matter of weeks. He said he believed the organisation will benefit not only the US but also Qatar and will strengthen both countries’ commercial relationship. “That relationship is extremely important… this will be a very important vehicle for better trade ties between Qatar and the US. So we at the embassy certainly look forward to supporting this American Chamber if and when it is registered.” “The Qatari government has been extremely responsive to the application, it has been studied by the Ministry of Justice and now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and both ministries have been excellent with the speed with which they have reviewed the application and the diligence they have shown in working with us to carefully consider the request,” said LeBaron during a reception at his residence.
