Qatari TV channel Al Jazeera has won the rights to televise more of France’s Professional Football League (LFP) Ligue 1 matches. A deal was finalised which gave Al Jazeera the rights over French pay TV channel Canal+ which currently broadcast 90 per cent of weekend Ligue 1 fixtures. From this year, Al Jazeera will broadcast eight live games from the league each week as well as a weekly football TV show. The latest deal follows an announcement in the summer that Al Jazeera acquired the rights to broadcast Ligue 1 overseas for 90 million euros. “The LFP and Al Jazeera have finalised an agreement for the sale of lots six (six matches) and nine (a weekly football magazine programme) following the appeal for candidates for the period 2012-16,” said a statement released by LFP. No financial details of the deal have been revealed although French newspaper l’Equipe valued it at around $315 million. In December it was reported that Al Jazeera had bought four of the five UEFA Champions League media rights packages in France for the next three years. 7Days
