The topic of cleanliness and pollution has triggered a recycling project for four young residents of Barwa Complex, Al Sadd.
Hiba Hussain Syed (grade 3 from Birla Public School),
Omar Hamzah Saiyed (grade 3 from ACS Doha),
Saud Syed Mohammed (grade 4 from Nobel International School) and
Younus Anzel Mashoor (was with Newton International school).
With the help of their Islamic Studies tutor, Musarrat Saiyed and assistant Alisha Saiyed, they implemented a recycling system within their building during summer break.
Services were contacted around Doha that would provide recycling bins and collection. The kids went door to door through the building, educating the residents about the dangers of plastic pollution, showing residents a presentation on their iPads. The kids also explained how to segregate plastic, paper and metal from general waste and put them in the three respective recycling bins. The rubbish is collected by the companies every 2-3 weeks as it fills up, all at no cost to residents or management.
The whole process has been simple and painless. All the correspondence was done over the phone and after inspecting the premises, the bins were installed. Mr. Mezhar Mohammed Wahab, manager at Waseef Property Management, has been very supportive of the project and provided a space for the recycling bins. The staff at Doha plastic, Global Metals and Al-Suwaidi Paper Factory have also been very cooperative.
The recycling project has completed one year and it is an achievement for these 7 to 10 year olds. The 10 storey building is occupied by Qatar Museums staff, who come from all over the globe and have been pivotal in the success of the project.
The four budding environmentalists went a step further; “when they play in the complex ground they tie a bag to their bicycles and pick up any stray rubbish to put into the recycling bins.” remarked the proud mothers, Naushin Hussain Syed and Haseena Bi Syed.
The group hopes Waseef Management extends the initiative to their other properties and the authorities and general public of Doha take on similar proactive attitudes towards this cause. The children look forward to introducing the project to their own schools and hope their initiative is met with support.
