Yesterday was not just another Friday at the Museum of Islamic Art Park, as twenty five thousand spectators gathered to enjoy the 1st Red Bull Flugtag ever in Qatar that exceeded all expectations. The 3 Pilots and a Hairdresser team was the flying experts as they clinched the title of this unique event, under the Patronage of H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority. This competition was organized in collaboration with main sponsor Ford, event management agency Innovations Unlimited ME, Qatar Museums Authority and the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) as the host venue, Qatar TV as the official TV partner, Qatar Tribune and Al Watan as the official print media, in addition to Renaissance Hotel. The winner team 3 Pilots and a Hairdresser scored 270 points accredited by the jury and flew for over a distance of 38 m. Team Spirit of Paris came in second position with 220 points, ahead of team The Equaliser in third position with 213 points. All participating teams performed entertaining shows before their take-off while the jury was scoring as per three criteria: creativity of the craft, showmanship, and flying distance. A 30m long platform allowed the teams to display their unique aircraft designed in several shapes such as animals, birds or fish, old or new planes, as well as incredible geometrical shapes. The exclusively human-powered aircraft took-off from a 6m height, flew for some distance then landed in the water in spectacular ways. It is to note that safety standards were meticulously respected as teams were instructed to use mainly floating material in building their aircraft; lifejackets and helmets were distributed to all team members for the flight, and the organizers adopted stringent safety measures. The winning team members expressed their excitement and thrill upon their victory mainly throughout the fierce competition and the creativity of other crafts. “Seeing the completed aircraft, the joy on the faces of all the spectators and teams during the whole day was an amazing reward for the Innovations Unlimited Team, especially after the diligent build up and preparation efforts”, says Markus Jordan, Managing Partner at Innovations Unlimited ME and adds, “It was an honor to be part of the 1st Red Bull Flugtag and I hope that we set a legacy with this event for many more to come.” Red Bull Flugtag ‘- German forFlying Day, took us back to the 09th century, to the first ever flying attempt by Arab inventor Abbas Bin Firnas, in a style never seen before in Doha. On top of the 34 crafts that took the ramp by storm, Red Bull Flugtag Qatar also hosted Red Bull Kite Force Team who performed a synchronized kite show, while world champions Duncan Zuur and Denise De Haan demonstrated unique wakeboarding maneuvers. - ILQ News -
