118th Philippine Independence Day Celebration

United Filipino Organizations of Qatar (UFOQ) together with Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) is proud to announce the 118th anniversary celebration of the declaration of Philippine Independence to be held at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel on June 3.

This year the celebration will start with an array of activities before the main event on June 3rd. Activities will include Dukhan Pre-PIDC celebration on May 6, 3x3 Basketball Tournament, The Zumba Morning on May 20, Culinary Food Festival, Now & Before Doll Exhibit for Philippine History and Fashion, Philippine Independence Week, Filipino Families in Qatar Photo Exhibition, Filipino Talent on May 27 and The Philippine Cultural Show on May 28.

The main event will start with the traditional flag raising ceremony at the Philippine Embassy in Qatar at 5:30 AM. The ceremony will be led by H.E. Ambassador Wilfredo C. Santos. Leaders of Filipino organizations, PID Committee and community members are expected to attend the ceremony which will conclude with ‘Almusal ng Bayan’ or community breakfast. This will be followed by a motorcade from the embassy to the Sheraton Doha Hotel where the day-long activities will take place.

The Parade of colors, 118Rose Display, singing, street dancing, photography competitions, band showdown, traditional and ethnic dance, car show, trade fair and a food exhibition are among the programs during the day. There will also be workshop sessions by MOI, medical mission, POLO-OWWA and SSS-Pag-ibig services at the venue. There will be an award ceremony, raffle drawing and performances by famous local Filipino artists to complete the celebration.

The Philippines’ embassy opened in Doha on May 4, 1992. Since its humble beginning 24 years ago, the Philippine Independence Day celebration has received extensive support from the Filipino community throughout the whole of Qatar. In the Philippines, June 12 every year is the official holiday for Independence Day while in Qatar it is celebrated on a Friday closest to June 12 to suit availability of most Filipinos in the country.
