The Pearl-Qatar Plans Several Activities for Earth Hour Including Environment Slogan Competition

The Pearl-Qatar, one of the leading and most glamorous urban developments in Qatar and the region, will observe for the fifth consecutive year the worldwide occasion of Earth Hour with additional activities that will accompany the typical switch-off to include an environmental slogan competition and a tree planting initiative.

Lights at The Pearl-Qatar will be dimmed Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm to join millions around the world in celebrating Earth Hour, a global grassroots movement encouraging individuals, businesses and governments to take positive actions for the environment, and celebrate their commitment to the planet by switching off non-essential lights for one designated hour.

Exterior lighting, non-essential interior lights and lights at many of The Pearl-Qatar’s residential units and retail outlets and restaurants will be turned off or dimmed considerably during the celebration, uniting the Island with some of the world’s other famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, BurjKhalifa and the Empire State Building, all dimming their lights to promote energy conservation and environmental responsibility. Additionally, as an annual tradition, the Earth Hour logo 60+ will be displayed on Porto Arabia’s Boardwalk using eco-friendly solar lights.

In tandem with the day’s activities, The Pearl-Qatar’s Environment Department is launching a competition for the best ten environmental slogans, while the winners will participate in planting a tree on the Island’s Grand Park with the slogan and author’s name imprinted on a specially crafted placard.

Submissions will be received by email on [email protected] or through The Pearl-Qatar’s social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram no later than March 14th to allow time for the judging panel to carefully select winners and contact them for the tree plantation event.

Winners of the best environment slogans will also receive a certificate acknowledging their effort with details of their tree. The information will also be disseminated on The Pearl-Qatar’s social media platforms to announce the benefit of this exercise.

The merit of this campaign is that it allows people and environment enthusiasts from all ages and walks of life to speak up and make their ‘green’ statements visible to the community in the hope that it will lead to more awareness and environmentally-responsible behaviors and lifestyles.

In this regard, Miss. Shaikha Al Emadi, Environment Awareness & Communication Officer at The Pearl-Qatar stated: “Conserving energy and protecting the environment are key strategic imperatives for United Development Company and its flagship Island development, The Pearl-Qatar, as part of their corporate social responsibility. This year, the environmental slogan competition is meant to raise the level of awareness and instill environmental concepts thatnurture a sustainable development culture across the community.”

For her part, Ms. Kate Fletcher, Senior Environmental Awareness Specialist at UDC added: “It is very exciting to engage individuals and many public and private sector institutions to interact with the idea of ​​reducing the excessive consumption of water and energy.”

The initiative for this year has therefore been carefully designed to enrich the concepts that help protect the environment for future generations and the adoption of green environmental ideas. The theme of the competition is to adopt positive environmental slogans which might highlight techniques that help in the rationalization and consumption of electricity and water in a civilized and responsible manner for the preservation of the environment, such as: "I do not leave the water faucet open while cleaning my teeth" or the slogan: "I'm green".”

The Pearl-Qatar is an ideal place to spread the message of preserving the integrity of the environment, especially as it embraces more than 56 nationalities from around the world, and is currently home to up to 13,000 residents. The Island attracts more than six million visitors a year from inside and outside the State of Qatar and receives over the weekend only more than 36 thousand cars.

The Pearl-Qatar has an excellent environmental program including the banning of plastic bags on the Island. It also has an established Environmental Affairs Department that regularly runs projects and programs with the aim of protecting and enhancing Qatar’s unique ecosystem.
