Qatargas promotes ‘Go Green’ carbon footprint calculator among students in Qatar

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from Qatargas conducted a series of workshops in local schools and colleges, introducing the concept of 'My Carbon Footprint' to over 300 students.

As a fundamental element of Qatargas’ annual “Go Green” environmental awareness program, 'My Carbon Footprint' demonstrates the important contribution individuals can make in the global effort to reduce human-driven climate change. This initiative is a part of Qatargas’ commitment towards cultivating sustainable environmental practices and fostering community wellbeing, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The workshops included a comprehensive awareness session, providing students with the opportunity to calculate their individual carbon footprint using a specially designed Personal Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculator available on the Qatargas website.

The students utilized the PCF Calculator to support their research, part of which included tasking them to suggest potential solutions to some of the most pressing climate and environmental challenges Qatar may face in the future. To facilitate an immersive and engaging learning experience with industry SMEs, the students presented their findings, ideas, and concepts to a Qatargas Go Green team in the form of presentations and posters at the end of each workshop.

Some of the participating schools and colleges included Qatar Academy for Science & Technology (QAST) at Qatar Foundation, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Al Khor International School (AKIS), and Texas A&M University. The workshops were held over a period from August to November 2021.

Commenting on the workshops, Qatargas Chief Health Safety Environment and Quality (HSE&Q) Officer Khalifa Ahmed Al-Sulaiti said: “The My Carbon Footprint initiative is a progressive step that aims to engage Qatargas employees and our important stakeholders, including our local community and students, by providing them with the tools and knowledge to evaluate their personal carbon footprint. It is also intended to raise awareness on good behaviours and practices to reduce their individual impact on the environment, and to share their environmental stories and experiences with others. We hope that this exchange will instill a personal responsibility to prudently manage our carbon footprints, which in turn will permeate into our daily lives both at home and at work.”

Qatargas has a long history as an environmental leader in the oil and gas industry. The ongoing success of the Go Green campaign is testament to this, highlighting the company's commitment to achieving a sustainable premier environmental performance while playing a key role in supporting local environmental education initiatives. The Company invites the public to utilize the Qatargas PCF Calculator available on the Qatargas website, which explores the personal carbon impacts of everyday activities such as shopping, water use, waste generation and travel. By understanding the effect our daily activities have on the environment, we are in a better position to make more informed choices to reduce our carbon footprint. Qatargas plans on including additional schools and colleges in the Go Green outreach program through 2022.
