Three people were killed and a few others injured in accidents reported from different parts of the country yesterday.
The accidents were reported from Mesaieed and Mukheniz areas. The nationalities and other details of the deceased were not known.
Meanwhile, an SUV parked in an open parking area near the Grand Mosque caught fire early yesterday. There were no reports of any injuries.
The incident occurred while the faithful had gathered in the mosque for Eid prayers.
The timely arrival of Civil Defence personnel, who put out the flames swiftly, helped prevent the fire from spreading to other vehicles parked in the vicinity.
A communique from the Traffic Department said its officials had taken extra care to ensure that vehicle movement remained smooth throughout the day. Additional forces were put on duty as there were expectations of large crowds flocking to different locations in the city.
However, because of extremely high temperatures, most people remained indoors and roads saw only limited traffic until the evening.
Traffic police and other security forces were deployed in large numbers on and around roads that led to mosques and prayer grounds.
Similarly, the authorities kept strict vigil on beaches across the country as many people throng these places on the first three days of the Eid holidays. However, owing to the hot and sultry conditions, not too many people ventured out to these places yesterday.
A communique from the Coast Guard said its personnel carried out intensive patrolling on the seas. Security departments in different places had also made adequate arrangements in their respective areas and their personnel were on high alert in many locations.
