The Simaisma beach is a well used family beach, and since it is so popular there is a tendency for litter to accumulate both on the beach and in the surrounding mangroves which are an important wildlife habitat. The Doha Beach Clean Project organized a beach cleaning activity at Simaisma Family beach on 27th May, 2016.

At 8 am, approximately 35 volunteers gathered at the beach with the motive of removing all the waste from the area. During the morning's event around 20 sacks of assorted rubbish and litter were removed from both the beach shoreline and the ecologically important mangrove habitats. The weight of the removed litter was estimated at 250kgs and included tyres that had been thoughtlessly discarded in the mangroves.

Refreshments were kindly provided by Simaisma resort to help keep the volunteers hydrated during what was a successful and rewarding morning's activity.

“I have been interested in environmental protection my whole life. I studied environmental management at degree level and I'm concerned about the effect human activity and carelessness is having on our natural environments. While I am in Qatar, I want to put something back into the community and assist where I can in improving the State of Qatar outside of my day job which is a Health Safety and Environmental Manager at Katara Projects. There is much to do in respect of educating people not to throw litter to the ground and be careless with their rubbish and also to provide the infrastructure that allows more responsible decisions on waste management and litter control to be made by all who live in Qatar”, said Casey Fleming ,the Doha Beach Clean Project Manager.
