Qatar Museums (QM) announced a new season of dynamic and exciting exhibitions and events coming to Doha this fall. Under the patronage of its Chairperson, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, QM has worked with leading artists and institutions from around the world to bring a series of evocative and inspiring shows to audiences in Qatar.
The programme includes El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale to be held at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Education City Centre, Doha, Qatar).
El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale, the largest ever survey mounted of the work of the acclaimed artist El Anatsui (born 1994, Ghana), perhaps Africa's most prominent living artist, will go on view at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art from 1 October 2019 - 31 January 2020.
As the exhibition title suggests, the survey, curated by the late Okwui Enwezor, former Director of Haus der Kunst and Chika Okeke-Agulu, Professor of Art History at the Department of Art and Archeology, Princeton University, will focus on the triumphant and monumental quality of Anatsui's sculptures. The exhibition will encompass every medium in the artist's prodigious fifty-year career, including the signature bottle-cap series developed over the last two decades; wood sculptures and wall reliefs spanning the mid-1970s to the late 1990s; ceramic sculptures of the late 1970s; as well as drawings, prints, and books.
The exhibition is organized by Haus der Kunst, Munich in cooperation with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, the Kunstmuseum Bern, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Following its showing at Mathaf, the exhibition will tour to the Kunstmuseum Bern (13 March to 21 June 2020); and then to Guggenheim Bilbao (17 July to 1 November 2020).

Magnificent Jewels of Jean Schlumberger: From the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Collection, National Museum of Qatar (Doha, Qatar), 15 October 2019 15 January 2020
The National Museum of Qatar will present an exhibition surveying the work of Jean Schlumberger (19071987), who transformed 20th-century fashion with his creative designs for highly sculptural, vibrant, and imaginative jewelry and accessories inspired by natural forms. Magnificent Jewels of Jean Schlumberger: From the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Collection includes more than 100 pieces of jewelry and accessories. The exhibition debuted in 2017 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (USA) and has since traveled to The Museum of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Florida (USA) and The National Museum of China in Beijing.
After emerging as a popular costume jeweler in Parisian high society in the late 1930s, Schlumberger opened an independent shop in New York City. Within a decade, he had earned a devoted clientele and his own salon at Tiffany & Co.'s iconic Fifth Avenue headquarters. As a signature designer for the American luxury jewelry firm for more than thirty years, Schlumberger became well known for his interpretations of animal and botanical subjects, particularly marine life and flowers, which are among the highlights of the Rachel Lambert Mellon Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), the largest and most comprehensive public collection of jewelry and art objects by Jean Schlumberger.
Dr. Michael R. Taylor, Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Art and Education, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and Kristie Couser, Curatorial Assistant for Works on Paper, The Clark Art Institute, have organized this exhibition.
Set in Stone: Gems and Jewels from Royal Indian Courts, Museum of Islamic Art (Doha, Qatar), 23 October 2019 18 January 2020
In celebration of the 2019 Year of Culture Qatar-India, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is delighted to present an exhibition on magnificent gems and jewellery from India. Set in Stone: Gems and Jewels from Royal Indian Courts will showcase more than 100 spectacular pieces from across Qatar Museums' collection, including many masterpieces that have never been displayed before. Drawing from MIA's permanent collection, the National Museum of Qatar, and Qatar Museum's Orientalist Collection, this exhibition will bring together a splendid array of jewellery, jewelled objects, works on paper, and photography, including highlights such as MIA's famous gold and a gem-set falcon and the brilliant diamond necklace from Varanasi.
Whether left in their natural state, carved, or set within gold, precious stones adorned a variety of objects that came to be associated with the wealthy elite, Emperors and Maharajas. Spectacularly opulent, these objects defined Indian luxury. The exhibition's journey begins with ancient mines and ends with contemporary Qatari jewellery. Starting with "Precious Stones", the visitor discovers the cultural and economic significance of stones in India before then experiencing the rich role gems play within the "Court and Ceremony" of the Mughal Empire. The third section, "Beyond the Court" shows the personal, private and devotional function of jewellery, highlighting the amazing diversity of craftsmanship across India. Lastly, "Qatar Connection: Pearls for Gold" illustrates the longstanding cultural and commercial ties between Qatar and India, as seen through jewellery.
