Earth Hour - QMWBC 1

In celebration of Earth Hour 2017, the Qatar Marriott Worldwide Business Council represented by The W Doha Hotel & Residences, The St. Regis Doha, The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, Sharq Village & Spa, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Doha Marriott Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton and the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel came together to show their commitment to the environment and build eco-consciousness by going dark for an hour on March 25th at 8:30pm local time. The participating hotels joined millions around the world in switching off lights in a collective effort to spread a powerful message about environmental awareness.

During the hour, the hotels’ exterior signage lighting and non-essential interior lighting were switched off. Candlelight was used in appropriate public areas such as lobbies and restaurants. Guests were actively encouraged to participate in the Earth Hour activities and were invited to enjoy candlelit receptions in the hotels’ lobbies.

Earth

This year’s iconic event marked the tenth anniversary of the Earth Hour movement which started as a one-city event in Sydney in 2007, forcing people to acknowledge the pressing need for climate action. The annual global environmental awareness event was created and formulated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to emphasize the threat of global warming and the need to reduce carbon emissions. An unprecedented 187 countries and territories participated, with over 3,000 landmarks lending their support to help climate change.

Speaking about the initiative, John Louie, General Manager Marriott Doha Hotel and Chairman for the Qatar Marriott Worldwide Business Council said, “It is always heartening to be part of a bigger collaboration and the Marriott International Hotels in Doha are proud to have joined forces to take positive steps against climate change. This is one of the most pressing issues we have that if we don’t address can negatively affect the lives of generations to come. Worldwide movements such as Earth Hour are standing testimony to the fact that every simple gesture contributes towards a larger general cause. Earth Hour highlights a philosophy we as a group try to practice year-round and beyond this, we are all encouraged to play our active role in preserving our planet.”
