Are YOU excited about supporting Qatar in hosting the first-ever carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup in 2022? You can do your part in positioning Qatar as a leader in turning awareness into a new level of consciousness and momentum for climate action. We need massive changes.

What will be YOUR story in 2022 when reporters approach you and ask you about YOUR carbon footprint and YOUR contributions to a carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup. We have the power and the magic within us.

Remember that we must scale! In a society, the resources to scale are in our daily actions, daily purchases, daily choices, daily habits and believes because these are in our direct control. So, how do we tap into these resources? It’s a bit like MAGIC. Like super powers. Let’s have some fun together and harvest these superpowers for making this world a better place together. So before discussing about this week's challenge, let's we get to know a bit more about SustainableQATAR’s 52 weekly challenges.

What is SustainableQATAR’s 52 weekly challenges?

SustainableQatar, an independent action-based think and do tank that addresses environmental sustainability in Qatar, was founded in 2008 to raise awareness, share actionable knowledge, and encourage connections and collaboration between individuals and groups. It also actively engages members of the public, private, and government sectors to take environmental sustainability action

SustainableQATAR’s 52 weekly challenges – that is one challenge per week for a whole year themed by month – are Qatar-specific and Qatar-relevant opportunities for all residents to take actions in personal life, work and within our communities.

The intent for these weekly challenges is to create actionable knowledge for every resident and individual to engage in climate action and become a participating member of society to collectively turn our environmental footprint into a positive handprint because these daily actions are in our control and do make a difference.

Here's how to participate in the weekly challenge!

To participate, please read the short statement about the impact of our personal actions and why it matters to start doing things differently. Learn why it matters and how you can make a difference by following the suggested alternative.

Then simply follow the suggested alternative for better-informed decision- making and thereby reducing and/or eliminating carbon emissions in our personal lives for cumulative effect.

Challenge #8: April 21 ~ TRANSPORTATION: Smart Driving

We love our cars; we depend on them here in Qatar and we can show off. Driving styles are as diverse as Qatar’s population, making driving more like a dance as we move around each other and through constantly changing traffic patterns. We accelerate and break, accelerate and break which uses more fuel and lowers mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic.

Even though fuel prices are rising they are still cheap compared worldwide. So, does it matter how we drive? YES, fuel-efficient driving is a smart investment – saving your car and your health.

SustainableQATAR dedicates April to transportation, connectivity, and mobility for the weekly challenges. Let us champion environmental sustainability through personal actions to reduce transportation-related emissions and participate in this weekly challenge!

Speeding uses more fuel as well.

The faster you travel, the more wind resistance you’ll encounter, and the more fuel your vehicle will consume just to maintain speed. Traveling at 110km/h uses up to 25% more fuel than cruising at 90km/h. Depending on the car, for city driving, around 60km/h is the most fuel-efficient speed. For best efficiency, maintain a fairly constant speed, avoiding excessive accelerating and breaking. Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and use less fuel in the process.

Travel outside of peak times

Travel outside of peak times and avoid known areas of heavy traffic; you’ll spend less time stuck in queues and slow-moving traffic and consume less fuel.

Replace a clogged air filter

The air filter keeps impurities from damaging your engine. Replace a clogged air filter to improve fuel economy by as much as 10%.

Keep your car clear of any unnecessary items

For every extra 45 kilograms carried in a car, the fuel efficiency can drop by 2%. Keep your car clear of any unnecessary items to save on fuel.

Take a photo of your weekly action and post it on social media using hashtags #SustainableQATAR #52Challenges.
