Ivan Mangu is from the Philippines and loves taking photographs of families because "you get to meet new people and eventually become friends, you get to see new places, you get to capture the fleeting beauty of those in-between moments and, lastly, you get to appreciate the raw reality of everyday life."

Ivan absolutely loves photography and "everything that comes with it". He actually works for a company, and photography is what he does on the side. His photographs are masterpieces and right now, he's one of the busiest photographers in Doha.

He became serious about photography when he came to Qatar four years ago. At that time, he didn't have many friends and when his wife saw how bored he was, she bought him a camera to start a hobby. He started by taking his wife's pictures and architectural sceneries. Then one day, a friend asked him to capture some shots for his wedding, and after that "the rest was history".

Ivan advises anyone who wants to take up photography to just keep it clicking, keep on learning and trust the process.

Najla Nabil is an expat in Qatar from Pakistan. She's been here for 13 years and is a self-taught family photographer. Since she has an aviator husband, the travel opportunities she's had made her want to improve her photography. She says photography "has little to do with what I see, and everything to do with the way I see it."

Najla is a photographer in search of the perfect light and loves what she does because of the "connections you form during a shoot that result in beautiful moments with relaxed, happy people in front of your lens." It’s also given her some lovely friendships over the years, and returning clients.

Najla tells anyone who is interested in photography to "not get overwhelmed with how much others around you may have achieved. We all started somewhere. Find a community online or in your city, where you can get support and share knowledge."

Angela is from the US, and has been doing professional family photography for four years now, but "has been learning and practising for eight". She started taking photographs when her oldest daughter was born because she wanted to learn how to take quality photos of her. Photography quickly became a passion for her that she "wanted to pursue with education and required a lot of time and practice."

Angela loves the connection captured in family photography. As a mom herself, looking back at photos of her kids and her growing family through different phases, makes her emotional: "To look at a photo and have it bring me back to the feelings of that moment or that phase of life, is such a gift! "She loves that she can capture those moments and give that gift to others. In her opinion: "there is no moment too small to be worthy of documenting if looking back at it makes you feel something."

For a photography newbie, her advice would be to pick up your camera after learning basic camera functions in manual mode and shoot every single day, in all different types of light, scenarios, and subjects. The challenge of different setting will improve your skills immensely.
