The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is just around the corner and we thought we might share some bits about the lifestyle people have in Qatar during this occasion. For expats who are new in the country, the experience of Eid in Qatar is a fascinating one.The holiday of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next lunar month, Shawwal.

From Qatari’s to Sudanese, we have asked everyone to give us a peek into the life of the locals living in Qatar. Where this is an occasion that is celebrated amongst Muslims all around the world, it is always fun to see every culture perceive it in their own way. After a lot of research and a few WhatsApp messages here and there, we are finally able to tell you a bit about the Qatari way of celebrating Eid.

Long story cut short, almost all the countries celebrate Eid the same way. A very family oriented event, Eid usually starts off with the men going off to pray whereas the women prep themselves in the latest designer wear to later go and pay their respect to the elders of the family. Where applying henna is a popular thing to do during Eid, it is not a necessity. However, most parlors will be crowded over the weekend so that those who do enjoy getting Henna get themselves a good deal at a good time!

As for the food, Machboos and Biryani are a favorite for the locals on Eid and I am sending a big virtual nod to all of you out there. I remember how exciting Eid used to be when I was a kid and the main reason for it used to be the Eidi that we used to get. This is another thing that Pakistani and Qatari culture have in common; Eidi. Instead of giving children gifts, elders of the family usually hand out money that is known as Eidi and it is the most exciting part of the day – except maybe having your Grandmother’s hand-made dishes.

Speaking of the country itself, Qatar has a lot planned for its locals. From the fireworks at Corniche to the events at Katara, they know how to make you feel right at home. The skyline is lit like the Milky Way and you can enjoy the festivities with your family. You can always avail the massive discounts at malls during this time too! However, some people take this holiday as an opportunity to travel as well since the government gives almost a week long holiday.

An event that mainly concerns family (and friends for those who don’t have family here), Eid is still one of the best events of the year for many people. All those clothes, bangles and delicious food finally gets a chance to shine in its everlasting glory.
