Over the weekend, there has been a buzz on social media after some residents were turned away from entering certain malls because they were wearing shorts. The ILoveQatar.net team has received a lot of emails and DMs requesting clarification on this matter.
Based on our research, there is no specific law that prohibits the wearing of shorts or defining the length of the shorts. However, Article 57 of the Constitution states that:
The respect of the Constitution, compliance with the laws issued by Public Authority, abiding by public order and morality, observing national traditions and established customs is a duty of all who reside in the State of Qatar or enter its territory.
Visit Qatar's website also states that:
"Attitudes towards dress in Qatar are relaxed, but visitors (men as well as women) are expected to show respect for the local culture by avoiding excessively revealing clothing in public. It is generally recommended for men and women to ensure their shoulders and knees are covered."
The ILoveQatar.net team reached out to the major shopping malls (via the mall's contact number or DM) in Qatar and these are their responses.
This applies to both men and women and the below-mentioned malls also said that shoulders must be covered.
Alhazm Mall has the following dress code policy:
