Aspetar, the orthopaedic sports medicine hospital in Qatar, continues its pivotal role in supporting Qatar’s sporting delegations to international competitions with the announcement it has extended its medical support to Qatar’s Olympic Team at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, from August 5th to 26th.

Dr. Juan-Manuel Alonso, Acting Chief of Sports Medicine at Aspetar and the appointed Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Qatari delegation to Rio, will head a team of six practitioners from Aspetar to provide support to the athletes competing in a range of disciplines.

Commenting on the hospital’s support to the Qatari delegation to Rio, Dr. Muhammad Ghaith Al-Kuwari, Acting Director General of Aspetar, said:

“Aspetar is always keen to support Qatar’s sports teams and delegations. Therefore, we are pleased to offer our services to Qatar’s Olympic stars travelling to Rio this summer in order to help them reach their maximum performance during the games. The hospital is committed to fulfil this remarkable role by utilizing its medical and practical experience to serve the participating teams, provide athletes with the world’s best experts in sports medicine, and support Qatar’s delegation to the 2016 Olympic Games.”

Aspetar has been an important part of Qatar’s Olympic Games preparations and has been providing medical support to Qatar’s travelling athletes for months in the build up to the competition in Brazil. The hospital has provided numerous services to Qatar’s largest ever Olympic delegation including treating and training over 60 athletes, coaches, administrators and medical staff.

Dr. Juan-Manuel Alonso, Acting Chief of Sports Medicine at Aspetar and the appointed CMO of the Qatari delegation to Rio, said:

“Our main role in Rio will be to monitor the health of the athletes and help maximise their performances on the field. It’s extremely important for all of Qatar’s travelling athletes to stay healthy during the period of the games and we’ll be on hand to ensure they do. Our experts will provide injury diagnosis, rehabilitation, as well as medical consultancy and advice concerning nutrition, recovery, how to overcome jetlag, and how to protect athletes from communicable, respiratory and virus infections during this time of the year.”

During the past months, Aspetar provided a number of medical screening services necessary to obtain athletes’ permission to participate in the games, and administered frequent traveller vaccinations to a number of athletes and officials in collaboration with the country’s Ministry of Health. The hospital is currently overseeing the process of shipping all necessary medical supplies such as antibiotics, analgesics, dressings and other consumables to provide proper medical care to athletes.

Qatar’s Olympic team has also benefited from additional services and facilities at the world leading hospital, including access to advanced altitude-inducing normobaric hypoxic (oxygen-reduced) rooms at Aspetar that allow athletes to live and train at atmospheres similar to the location of the competition.

Aspetar’s experts have a wealth experience having accompanied Qatar’s Olympic delegation to 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. The hospital also appointed medical delegations to accompany the Algerian national football team at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup competitions in South African and Brazil respectively, as well working with the Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) national football team at the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

The hospital has a long and proud history of providing medical support to sports clubs and federations in Qatar as well as partners from leading international sports teams and clubs.
