Competitive e-sports is rapidly developing in the gaming scene in Qatar. E-sports tournaments have steadily risen over the past few years, and the fighting game genre has been a budding sensation in the community.
Abdulla Al-Thani is the lead tournament organizer for Super Smash Bros. Qatar (SSBQ) who have put together local Smash events and competitions. When he’s not organizing events with his team, he’s also a gamer and a streamer.
Get to know more about Abdullah Al-Thani, his love for gaming and his journey as a streamer and also SSBQ!
AA: I consider myself like everyone else: a simple man with a love for video games from an early age.
The content I produce is my usual game plan for the day, and whatever I feel like playing, I share with the world through Twitch. My content comprises various game genres, from shooters and progression games to battle royales. I am very inconsistent with the games I play, but I believe my viewers like it that way.
AA: Super Mario on the Nintendo SNES was the game that started my love for video games. My fondest memories were playing the game with my siblings.
AA: The gaming community is growing with each passing year. Every time a new game comes out, new players start investing their time in perfecting their way of playing them.
The culture of gaming has been in the country for the longest time. You can ask anyone about growing up with gaming consoles in their house; everyone has at least played one console or seen a console being played.
AA: The competitive scene is where you must attend and play with other competitive players to understand your level and knowledge about the game. They are usually super friendly people with this tight sibling-like connection who share the love and passion for a certain game.
Everyone is welcomed with open arms into these communities. But of course, you will need to bring your best skills to prove yourself within the community and make a name for yourself.
AA: SSBQ started as just a few friends hosting tournaments in a local gaming center to see who was the better player. After seeing more people trying to participate in our tournaments, we got bigger. From 5 friends gathering to 10 to 20, it just kept snowballing from there for the better!
Right now, SSBQ isn't the biggest but is the most active community in Qatar in terms of most tournaments held per month.
AA: I can’t share tournament plans just yet, but if you follow our socials, we are cooking up something big that will 100% hype the people to participate more.
AA: I enjoy battle royales like Apex Legends; this is one of the games that I’ve invested a lot of time in recently. I also dabble in some mobile gaming, especially when I’m travelling. Games like Diablo Immortal and Echos of Mana are some of the mobile games I play.
AA: I would like to see events like EVO or GamesCon be a thing in Qatar. I’m sure many people will back me up in bringing in more than just gaming events. ComicCon and CosplayCon would be something interesting to see here too.
AA: Don’t ever give up. Your viewer count and your content numbers only increase with someone willing to push further regardless of dropping numbers. Don't give up. Keep at it until you make it.
They will tell you to stop or tell you that there is no future in it, don’t listen to them and believe in what you’re doing for yourself. Good things come to those who try their best.
AA: Apart from what’s already been said, I want to give a shout out to all gamers in Qatar and the rest of the world. We all have the same idea and same passion for gaming. So if you enjoy gaming all day or it is just something you do to pass the time, please enjoy it as much as possible.
