At an event at the Four Seasons Hotel, Vodafone revealed its promise that will come to life in a new and bold brand campaign. This comes almost 10 years since Vodafone switched on its mobile network in March 2009, during which the company has been at the forefront of the digital era.

Addressing the audience, Vodafone Qatar’s Chief Executive Officer, Sheikh Hamad Abdulla Jassim Al Thani, said: “Qatar is one of the most advanced countries in the world in terms of digital adoption, technology infrastructure and pioneering innovation. I am extremely proud of our role at the forefront of the digital era – which has seen us being a leading partner in providing intelligent platforms and connectivity solutions to the smart cities of the future to our 4G and now, commercially live 5G network, to our growing broadband footprint, and to the ecosystem of digital products and services we have built.”

“These are just a few examples of the world class digital experiences we are delivering to our customers which are part of the more than 8 billion Qatari Riyals we have invested to date. As we have since our beginnings nearly ten years ago, we will continue our strong commitment to pioneer digital innovation in Qatar and to be a leading contributor to the bold and ambitious aims of the Qatar National Vision 2030.”

Mr. Diego Camberos Vodafone Qatar’s Chief Operations Officer, further added: “The digital era is well underway and with it comes a wide spectrum of opportunities that are changing and improving the way people live, work and operate businesses. For the people of Qatar, Vodafone GigaNet is a promise of a great digital experience bringing the best of the world on your fingertips so your personal growth and development is not restrained but empowered to live a better today and build a better tomorrow.”

Details of Vodafone Qatar’s technological milestones to date that have positioned it at the forefront of the digital era were shared by Mr. Ramy Boctor, Vodafone Qatar’s Chief Technology Officer.

“A turning point happened 5 years ago when we poured heavy investments into completely revamping and upgrading our entire radio network to the latest technology,” explained Boctor

“In addition to significantly increasing our outdoor and indoor coverage, we started by deploying 4G technology across 100% of our network sites, giving customers super speeds of up to 1Gbps. We’ve continued the enhancements to handle the high demand on our robust data network, which has increased 8 times over the last 4 years. We also understand that many of our customers are frequent travelers, so have focused on providing an unparalleled roaming experience. This includes having the widest 4G coverage while roaming in 83 countries across 129 operators.

This work has not gone unnoticed. We are proud of the local and global recognitions such as the Communications Regulatory Authority 2018 audit where Vodafone Qatar achieved the best speeds for average download and uploads for local data. On voice, Vodafone Qatar had the fastest call set-up time and best voice quality, and the GSMA rating us as a Premium Operator for our roaming services for 3 years in a row.”

Vodafone Qatar has made significant progress in building out its fixed infrastructure in several locations around the country and is providing the backbone and fixed infrastructure for many of the country's iconic developments. In the past 7 months alone, the Company has rolled fibre connectivity, capable of handling speeds of up to 1 Gbps, in more than 20 locations across Qatar including The Pearl, Lusail City, Msheireb Downtown Doha, Education City, C-Ring road, Al Khor road, West Bay and Wukair to name a few.

“Our fixed line network will bring much needed sustainable and effective competition to Qatar which benefits businesses and consumers alike by encouraging further investment and ultimately delivering innovation and efficiency,” said Boctor

Significantly, Vodafone Qatar was one of the first operators in the world to go live with 5G commercially and the first to have connected customers to 5G in the country. This comes after having achieved strong progress in building out its 5G network across the country since switching it on in August last year. Since then, the Company has continued to roll out its 5G network in key locations across the country from Al Waab to Katara and several others.

In the coming months, Vodafone will be making a series of exciting announcements related to the GigaNet launch. These include developments on major partnerships, new areas for fibre deployment, and new products and services all designed to engage and educate customers about the network and its many capabilities.
