United Development Company (UDC), a leading Qatari shareholding company and a socially responsible establishment, has signed up as the goldsponsor of “Qatar Labors Rights Protection” progress report book set to be released on May 1, which marks the celebration of International Workers’ Day.

The book will be officially launched at a press conference on May 3rd under the patronage of Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, H.E Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al Thani and will comprise 350 pages of valuable and informative Arabic content which will be widely distributed locally and internationally to all concerned entities.

On this occasion, Roger Dagher, Director of Corporate Communications at United Development Company said: "The Pearl-Qatar is the ultimate model of an integrated community which values ethnic and cultural diversity and equally embraces the concept of living in perfect synergy. To that end, UDC supports initiatives that assist in fostering such a culture through demonstrating a growing interest in the work and living environments of residents and workers at The Pearl-Qatar, whether through the development of integrated human resources strategies or the organization of events and internal initiatives to stimulate and reward workers for their good deeds.”

Dagher further added that holding high ethical standards is a fundamental pillar of UDC and its flagship project The Pearl-Qatar, at a time when the company is actively engaged in transferring this knowledge and best practices to contractors, developers and businesses operating on The Pearl.

It is worth mentioning that UDC has set up The Contractor Incentive Program providing contractors with the incentive to work in a more environmentally conscious manner, follow environmental laws and regulations, create awareness about the environment among workers on the construction sites and be recognized publicly for their performance and accomplishments.

As a company playing a key role in the country’s development, UDC’s business practices are closely aligned to the wider goals of sustainable economic and social development in Qatar. Therefore, the company employs the highest standards of corporate social responsibility across its entire portfolio. These standards cover the welfare of its employees and laborers originating from more than 56 countries, the environmental consequences of project activities, community services and volunteer work, as well as responsible and transparent corporate governance.

The book launch will complement the second conference on ‘Protection of Workers Rights in Qatar’ organized by Dar Al Sharq which recognizes a key component of the 2030 national vision that aims to create an advanced society in Qatar capable of sustaining its development and providing a high standard of living for all its people.

The conference and subsequent book launch will bring together local government officials, representatives of international and local rights organizations and decision makers from private companies to network, discuss and debate the pertinent issue of laborers’ rights protection and develop policies and recommendations that will benefit the large migrant workforce and assist with sustained growth and development of Qatar.
